Bhubaneswar: A group of picnickers had a narrow escape today which having a good time on the riverbed in Jamunali village in Riyamal block in Deogarh district. The youths and children were enjoying the picnic on the river bank while some of them were happy taking selfies strutting on the riverbed.
All of a sudden the river was filled with water has the gates of a dam nearby were opened. As water gushed in with full force, around 10 youths and children clung to tree branches and shrubs on the river bank, to save their lives. All those who were trapped in the river belonged to Jamunali village.
On being reported, the Fire Service team from Riyamal rushed to the spot and rescued the stranded picnickers to safety. Till last reports came, the rescue work was in the final stage. The mishap took place at about 5 kilometres from the dam whose 8 out of 9 gates were opened. Steps were taken to shut the dam gates following the incident.
