Bhubaneswar: It is the dawn of a New Year in Odisha marking the beginning of a new Panjika, which is the yearly calendar of Odia festivals, timings and predictions. The occasion is celebrated as Maha Vishuba Sankranti or Pana Sankranti, named after ‘Pana’ the main drink prepared on this occasion.
Taking to Twitter on this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “My heartfelt wishes to the people of Odisha on Odia New Year and Maha Bishuba Pana Sankranti. I pray that all your aspirations are fulfilled in the coming year. May everyone be blessed with health and happiness.”

In celebration of the New Year, people across the State throng various temples and relish the sumptuous ‘Bela Pana’- wood apple, fruits and sugar. The festival is celebrated with visits to Shiva, Shakti, or Hanuman temples, as the day is considered to be the birthday of Hanuman.
