Puri/Bhubaneswar: It is the dawn of a New Year in Odisha marking the beginning of a new Panjika, which is the yearly calendar of Odia festivals, timings and predictions. In celebration of the New Year and on the occasion of Maha Vishuba Sankranti or Pana Sankranti, people across the State thronged various temples and relished the sumptuous ‘Bela Pana’- wood apple, fruits and sugar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Wishing the vibrant Odia community a Happy New Year! I hope all your dreams are fulfilled. Praying for everyone's well-being and happiness.”
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also tweeted, “I convey my hearty wishes and greetings to all, on the occasion of auspicious Vishuba Sankranti aka Odia New Year. I pray to Lord Jagannath for peace, happiness and prosperity among all.” Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal too conveyed his wishes on Twitter.
Devotees also offered prayers to Lord Hanuman, as the day is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti too. Several people observed a full day fast and on the other hand, youngsters were seen lining up to consume ‘Pana’ and refresh themselves. A new vigor and vibrancy was noticed in the faces of the people as the State heralded the New Year.
