Cuttack: The convict in rape and murder of a minor girl from Salepur was awarded death sentence by a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Cuttack on Thursday.
The court had on Wednesday convicted the accused Mohammad Mustaq under sections 363, 302, 367 (a) & (b) of IPC and 6 of POCSO Act but had reserved the judgement.
Reportedly, the 6-year-old girl who was reported missing after she went to a shop near Jagannathpur Nodal Upper Primary school to buy chocolates was found unconscious in a school compound in Salipur area of Cuttack on April 21 last year.
The accused lured her away with a chocolate and after raping her on the school premises, he attempted to kill her by throttling her. She had been rushed to a hospital in Salepur, but later shifted to the SCB.
She died at the SCB on April 29 last year after struggling for life for more than a week. Later, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for her kin.
