Dhenkanal: Police on Sunday arrested four of seven youths accused of sexual assault on a 22-year-old homeless woman under Bhapur police limits in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
According to reports, the accused have been allegedly sexually assaulting the woman for past few months. The youths used to gang-rape the woman in an abandoned Anganwadi centre every night. The homeless woman, who is now seven months pregnant, was staying with her ailing father at this abandoned building.
The woman’s father is suffering from severe mental health complications and was unable to save his daughter from the ordeal.
Dhenkanal police swung into action after human rights activist Jayanta Kumar Das brought to the notice of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
On Sunday the evening, the young woman was taken to the District Head Hospital (DHH) for a medical examination and later sent to the local Sakhi Centre. She will now stay at the center under police protection.
The police have detained four persons for questioning and launched an manhunt for the remaining accused. Police officer Deepak Kumar Lenka said other accused in the case will soon be caught.
