Bhubaneswar: A Special Judge, Vigilance Court, Phulbani on Wednesday sentenced former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police Nabin Kumar Satpathy to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 after convicting him in a bribery case registered by the Odisha Vigilance.
Satpathy was charge-sheeted in Berhampur Vigilance Police Station Case No. 12 dated July 25, 2023, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹8,000 from a complainant.
At the time of the offence, Satpathy was serving as ASI at Kiakata Police Station in Angul district and was the Investigating Officer of a case in which the complainant was involved. The Vigilance probe established that he had demanded the bribe in exchange for extending undue favour to the complainant. He was later posted as Court ASI at Deogarh Court on an attachment basis.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance announced that it will move the competent authority for the dismissal of Satpathy from government service, in line with existing service rules applicable to convicted public servants.
The conviction reinforces Odisha Vigilance’s continued drive against corruption within the police force and public offices, officials said.
