**Dhenkanal:** A man was arrested by Gondia police on Saturday afternoon for alleged murder of Gulli Sahoo, a 55-year-old ‘mata’ (Hindu Nun) who was found dead outside her ashram on April 27 in Danda Ragadi forest of Kankalanda village of Joranda panchayat under Gondia Police station.
The arrested accused, identified as Biju Barik hails from Bhuban village of Dhenkanal district.
According to reports, Biju forcefully entered the mata’s house and under the influence of alcohol attempted to rape her. After failing to do so and afraid of being punished by the villagers, he murdered the ‘mata’ with a spade and fled with her two mobile phones and the crime weapon.
Dhenkanal SP Santosh Kumar Nayak informed, “The accused was known to the victim and had earlier met her for some work. On the day of crime, Barik found ‘mata’ alone and tried to rape her but she retaliated in protest. Afraid of being caught, the accused stabbed her with a spade repeatedly and fled with her mobile phones. He was traced by the location of the cell phones.”
The police have seized the two mobile phones, sim cards, weapon of crime and the bike used by the accused.
The police will be forwarding the accused soon. They are further investigating into the matter.
