Bhadrak: Police on Tuesday arrested two fraudsters on charges of duping a man of Rs 5 lakh by promising him to fourfold the amount in return.
According to allegation leveled by the victim identified as Narayan Sethi, Sethi got a phone call from an unknown number on February 16. The caller told that he would be provided Rs 20 lakh in cash of Rs 100 and Rs 50 denominations if he would pay them Rs 5 lakh with currency notes of Rs 500 denominations.
The accused Bulu Pati and Priyaranjan Nayak managed to convince Sethi that the scheme has been launched due to the scarcity of Rs 500 notes in the market. Sethi gave consent to the offer following which the accused fixed a date. The accused asked Sethi to come Paradip Road Toll Gate to exchange money.
As per the plan, Sethi gave the concerned persons Rs 5 lakh of Rs 500 denominations in cash. In return, the fraudsters gave him a box.
To his utter shock and dismay, Sethi found the box filled with sand barring a few notes of Rs 100 and Rs 50.
Subsequently, he filed a complaint with Bhadrak police station. Police arrested both the accused following an investigation into the incident.
