Cuttack: A violent clash broke out between police and protesters at Dargha Bazaar in Cuttack on Sunday, leaving several police officials and some media personnel injured. The confrontation occurred during a protest linked to the Durga idol immersion procession held late on October 3, resulting in heightened tensions in the city.
According to reports, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse demonstrators who were advancing despite orders to halt. Among the injured were DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo and the In-Charge of Dargah Bazaar police station, along with over six other police personnel. Several members of the media were also reportedly hurt during the unrest.
In response to the situation, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania appealed to the residents of Cuttack to maintain peace and uphold law and order.
“The Odisha Police and Commissionerate Police are fully prepared to handle any unlawful activities. Those involved in violent acts or planning to participate will face strict action,” the DGP said.
The District Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde confirmed that the situation is gradually returning to normal. He explained that internet services had been suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent further escalation of violence.
“We urge everyone to cooperate and maintain peace. Strict action will be taken against those disturbing public order,” the Collector added.
“People need to maintain peace. Some anti-social elements should not disturb Cuttack city, and those who incite violence will be arrested. We have already taken action, and we appeal to all residents to maintain peace,” said DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.
To contain the unrest, the Commissionerate Police formed three special teams under Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh’s supervision to identify and apprehend agitators. The teams have been instructed to take swift and firm action against those found responsible for inciting violence.
In light of the disturbances, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has announced a 12-hour bandh in Cuttack on Monday (October 6) protesting what it terms as the failure of the police and district administration to maintain law and order during the Durga idol immersion procession.
