Pregnant Woman Burnt Alive, Husband And Mother-In-Law Arrested

Aska: A four-months’ pregnant woman was burned alive by her husband and mother-in-law over demands for dowry in Debabhumi village under Aska police limits, the police said.

The incident occurred on October 30 and the arrests were made on Sunday based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s widowed mother.

Mamali Choudhary (25) had married Tukuna (40) six years ago. They have a five-year-old son and Mamali was carrying their second child, said Police reports.

They had repeated fights over demands of cash and gold jewellery.

On the fateful day, Tukuna with his mother Uma (65) doused Mamali with kerosene and set her ablaze, the police said.

On receiving information, the victim’s mother first rushed her to Aska hospital and then to MKCG Hospital, Berhampur. While the fetus died immediately, Mamali fought for her life even after suffering about 80 per cent burn injuries but succumbed yesterday. Both the bodies were sent for autopsy.

A case was registered against Tukuna and Uma under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 302, 304B, and 316. They were arrested and forwarded to court.
