Bhadrak: Tension ran high at District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Bhadrak following the death of a pregnant woman over alleged medical negligence on the part of doctors and nurses.

Sources said Manjulata, a resident of Biridi village under Agarpada police limits was admitted to Agarpada Community Health Centre after she complained of labour pain. She was referred to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital.

She was admitted to the Bhadrak Headquarters Hospital at 11.30 pm and taken to Operation Theatre (OT) in no time. However, she was brought back to general ward without getting operated upon. She was administered an injection and left to writhe in pain till 2 am. Though doctors took the signature of Manjulata’s husband Abhimanyu for C-Section, they did not carry out the operation. Abhimanyu’s repeated pleas to doctors and nurses to attend Manjulata went in vain.

Abhimanyu was told to take Manjulata to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack when it was too late. Manjulata died at 2.30 am thanks to the carelessness of doctors and nurses.  Inordinate delay by the doctors to carry out delivery also led to the death of the baby inside the mother’s womb, it is alleged.

The deceased’s mother-in-law Padmavati Das said, “Manjulata’s life could have been saved if doctors had asked us to shift her to SCB Medical College and Hospital before her condition deteriorated. We also urged the doctors to go for C-Section when her condition worsened but of no result.

Upon being informed, Agarpada police rushed to the spot and began an investigation into the matter.
