Born in 1932, Jayanti was elected to the Lok Sabha, twice – in 1985 from Cuttack and in 1998 from Berhampur. She was the first Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission. She was also the president of the All India Mahila Congress.
Apart from being an active politician, and a women’s leader, Jayanti was also a noted litterateur. She fell unconscious and was rushed to a private hospital here on Wednesday, where she was declared dead.
