Bhubaneswar: Odisha IG (Prisons & Correctional Services) on Monday ordered a probe into the violence involving an attack on an undertrial prisoner by gangster Haider’s son Munna at Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar.
As per a notification issued by the IG’s office, the probe will be conducted by Prisons DIG Anusuya Jena.
According to reports, Munna and his gang members attacked Soumyakant Mohanty, an undertrial prisoner in Jharpada Jail, on Sunday night over a dispute between the two. Soumyakant sustained severe head injuries in the attack and was admitted to the Capital Hospital.
In a complaint filed with the police in this regard, Soumyakant alleged that he was severely thrashed by Munna and his accomplices for writing to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), detailing the irregular activities inside the prison
Soumyakant was attacked after he sent a letter to the DLSA mentioning about free sale and use of marijuana within the facility and alleged that prisoners were forced to pay exorbitant amounts for basic amenities. They were allegedly being charged Rs 50,000 for proper accommodation, Rs 5,000 for telephone access, Rs 10,000 per month for meeting with outsiders.
Soon after this, DLSA officials conducted a surprise inspection of the jail on Saturday and seized mobile phones and drugs. Angered over the developments, Munna and his men allegedly beat up Soumyakant last night.
