Punjabi Mutt Near Jagannath Temple Sealed By Dist Adm

02 December 2019

Puri: The Puri district administration on Monday sealed the Punjabi mutt after cough syrup bottles were found inside a room of the mutt on Sunday.

As per allegations, some miscreants had forcibly occupied the room and were involved in illegal activities, including consumption of drugs and liquor. The building was sealed by police in presence of a magistrate.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the mutt last night and seized the cough syrup bottles. Police today in the presence of magistrate sealed the mutt which is located in front of the south gate of the Jagannath Temple.

Puri Collector, Balwant Singh said that complaints have been received regarding illegal drugs trade in Punjabi Mutt. “Any kind of narcotics trade will not be allowed to flourish. Police have got some substances and further investigation is underway,” said Singh.

As the particular structure was coming within 75 meters of the boundary wall of Srimandir that have been earmarked for the security corridor, discussions were underway whether to demolish or preserve it. However, the inmates staying at Punjabi Mutt refuted allegations of narcotics trade.
