Bhubaneswar: A blanket of dense fog enveloping Chilika Lake this morning has prompted the Puri district administration to temporarily suspend ferry services and tourist boat operations until 11 am. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of passengers and prevent any potential accidents due to poor visibility conditions.
According to an official letter, the administration has advised all concerned officers and authorities to strictly enforce the suspension of ferry services and tourist boats until further notice. The move is aimed at minimising risks to life and property amid the prevailing foggy conditions.
“In view of the prevailing heavy fog and poor visibility conditions reported across the district, which may pose serious risks to life and property, all concerned officers and authorities are hereby advised to ensure that no ferry services/Tourist boats are allowed to ply till 11 AM until further order”, read the letter issued from the Office of the Collector and District Magistrate, Puri.
“The reduced visibility due to fog significantly increases the likelihood of marine/riverine accidents, mishaps, and loss of human life. Therefore, as a preventive and safety measure, the following directions shall be strictly complied with: all ferry/ boat services across rivers, lakes and other water bodies shall remain suspended during periods of heavy fog and low visibility”, read the letter further.
It is worth mentioning that Chilika Lake, a popular tourist destination, attracts visitors from across the country and abroad. However, the foggy weather has now disrupted these activities, leaving many stranded.
