**Puri:** In the wake of protests by the peeved coconut farmers in the district, the district administration has rendered them a sigh of relief from distress sale as well as from the monopoly of money-minting middlemen.
The good news for the coconut farmers is that they can now reap the benefits by opting for online sale.
Puri Collector Arvind Agarwal told media, “Such an initiative will fetch the farmers precise price of their coconuts as the commission gained by the brokers will be checkmated and instead retained in their purses.
As per the decision taken at a meeting on Thursday chaired by the Puri Collector, the coconut farmers will sell their produce through the Regulated Market Committee (RMC) that will organise the sale online.
Accordingly, a panel has been constituted for the purpose. It is being headed by the Puri Collector while the convenor will be the member nominated from the Directorate of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies (DRCS), Odisha. The special panel will monitor the online system.
Detailed information about the number of farmers, their economic condition and coconut market will be gathered and monitored.
Following such a move by the district administration, the farmers concerned can avail coconut rate online and sell it to the government directly.
