Puri: Problems cropped up during demolition drive of Emar Mutt on third day (Saturday) as the seer refused to vacate the premises. Emar Mutt ‘Mahant’ Rajgopal Ramanuj Das said that he was unwell and needed rest. Under no circumstances, he would stay in a container.
Despite Puri Collector Balwant Singh’s persuasion on Friday, the adamant Mahant did not budge. A 35-foot-long and 10-feet-wide container house was also brought for his rehabilitation but he did not leave the Mutt.
Demolition of Emar Mutt, recognised as unsafe structure, is a part of the eviction drive of all structures within the 75 metre radius of the Meghanad Pacheri (the perimeter wall of the Jagannath temple).
While some parts of Emar Mutt are yet to be razed, district administration began taking measurements for Bada Akhada Mutt that is next in line. The occupants of the Mutt were asked to vacate the building by Saturday evening. It is notable to mention here that Singhadwara fire station and police station are located in Bada Akhada Mutt.
