Puri: The Rs 500 crore package announced today by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for development of Puri has been largely welcomed by people from all sections of the society in the Pilgrim City.

“This is definitely a welcome step. We had appealed to the Chief Minister through the media to reconsider the decision for demolition of buildings and houses in Puri. The Chief Minister has taken all that into consideration. The big projects like construction of ‘Sri Setu’ from Malatipatapur to Jagannath Ballav Mutt, Dhyan Mandir with a capacity to accommodate 10,000 devotees, development of a large lake and restoration of Musa river announced by the CM today are all welcome steps. We all the citizens of this city including sevayats welcome it,” said Binayak Das Mohapatra, a Daitapati sevayat.

“The Chief Minister’s announcement for developing Puri city is a welcome step. This will certainly lead to more inflow of tourists to Puri which will result in economic growth. With this Puri will get a special place in the tourist map,” said Bijay Mishra, a lawyer.

“The Chief Minister is giving special attention to Puri. This will result in development of Puri and its periphery. I appeal to all citizens of Puri to cooperate with him and bless him,” stated Gourahari Pradhan, a local.

Former Puri MLA Maheswar Mohanty has welcomed the Chief Minister’s announcement.

“The Chief Minister during his visit to Puri after Cyclone Fani had announced to make it into a world heritage city. I welcome his today’s announcement as a step towards achieving that. Am sure the Chief Minister will be sympathetic to those who will be affected,” said Mohanty.

BJP MLA from Puri Jayanta Kumar Sarangi was of the opinion that all stakeholders should be taken into confidence by the government.

“Today I met the Collector in this regard. A delegation which included our Zilla president, former councillors, lawyers and eminent persons accompanied me. We told him that all stakeholders should be taken into confidence. Especially, the street vendors should be rehabilitated, to which he has agreed. Both the State and the Central governments want development of Puri city but all stakeholders should be taken into confidence,” said Sarangi.
