Puri: A formal Blue Fag hoisting ceremony was held here at the Golden Beach as it has been awarded with the coveted global tag by the International Jury along with the very first eight beaches in India.
In addition, India has also bagged 3rd prize under the “International Best Practices” in pollution abatement in coastal regions.
Odisha Tourism Minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi graced the special occasion at the world-renowned pilgrim city here today.
As per a Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) communiqué, “This year ‘International Jury’ comprising of eminent environmental and scientific organizations viz. UNEP, UNESCO, IUCN, UNWTO, FEE, ILS, etc have conferred the nominated pilot beach, Golden Beach’ of Odisha the much-awaited ‘Blue Flag’ certificate for the tourist season 2020-21 making a mention in the FEE global website for recognition in international circuit. The jury also awarded 3rd prize in best practices of pollution abatement measures in coastal areas among a league of 50 developed nations.”
Notably, BEAMS (Beach Environment & Aesthetic Management Services) is an innovative programme piloted by SICOM, MoEF&CC, aimed at ‘sustainable development’ in the coastal regions and also serving the imperatives of environment protection and conservation of natural resources.
The programme also aims for the coveted global eco-label ‘Blue Flag’ certificate.
