Puri: At the meeting of the ‘Chattisa Nijog’ of Puri Jagannath Temple held here today, the officials and servitors discussed modalities for reopening the shrine. If everything goes well, the temple is likely to reopen for devotees from December second or third week this year.
The 12th century shrine is closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Dr Krishan Kumar said a decision will soon be taken in this matter. “We are preparing a system for reopening the temple devotees. Once the modalities are finalised, it is likely that the temple will be opened in the second or third week of December,” said Kumar.
The SJTA Chief added that this timeline will hold good, if everything goes well. However, devotees will not be allowed to the temple for the rare event which is scheduled on November 27 – the Nagarjuna Besa of Lord Jagannahth, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
About online darshan of the Lords, Kumar said this proposal was turned down in unison. “The Managing Comittee decided that Puri Srimandir has an age-old tradition and we will not break this. So, online darshan proposal will not be considered this year.”
