Bhubaneswar: The Jagannath Temple in Puri received a record-breaking donation of Rs 10,94,074 on New Year’s Day.
Apart from Rs 10,94,074 in cash, 300 mg gold, and 33 grams of 500 mg silver ornaments were found in the Hundi set up inside the temple as per the Hundi Act, 1975, according to the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration.
According to sources, the donations were made by devotees who visited the temple on January 1 to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath and his siblings. The temple’s hundi (donation box) collections are counted every evening, and the amount is disclosed to the public.
The temple authorities stated that the donations received on New Year’s Day are the highest ever recorded. Typically, the temple receives Rs 4-5 lakh in donations on regular days, which increases during festivals and holidays. However, this year’s New Year’s Day donations surpassed all previous records.
The donations will be used for the maintenance and development of the temple, as well as for charitable purposes.
