Bhubaneswar: Jagannath Temple in Puri will remain out of bounds for devotees for five hours from 1 pm on Friday for Rukmani Haran ritual which commemorates the elopement of Lord Krishna with Goddess Rukmini.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has issued a notification informing devotees that the temple will be closed for five hours to facilitate the Rukmani Haran rituals. The notification aims to help devotees plan their visit accordingly.
The Rukmini Haran ritual is traditionally observed on the auspicious day of Rukmini Haran Ekadashi, which falls on the eleventh day of the waxing moon in the month of Jyestha. This significant occasion takes place just four days before the Debasnana Purnima. On this day, the ritual reenacts the legendary story of Lord Krishna’s union with Rukmini.
According to legend, Rukmini, who was in love with Lord Krishna, sent him a secret message asking for his help in escaping her brother Rukmi’s plans to marry her off to Sisupala. As part of this plan, Lord Jagannath, adorned with Baula Pata, sends his representative Madanmohan to abduct Rukmini while she is praying at the Maa Bimala temple. A fierce battle ensues as Sisupala chases after them, but Lord Jagannath emerges victorious.
Following the battle, the temple servitors prepare for the divine wedding ceremony of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Rukmini, which takes place on the Vivaha Mandap on the temple premises.
