Puri: In a significant operation, the Puri Police have dismantled an illegal arms smuggling and supply syndicate with the arrest of six persons in a special drive led by the Puri Superintendent of Police.
The operation was carried out after receiving a specific tip-off about the illegal activities. Six accused individuals, including members of the organised crime syndicate, were arrested during the operation.
The accused individuals are Denga Muna alias Ramesh Parida, Babu Das alias Bhoi, Gudu Panda alias Rashmi, Kanha alias Harichandan Das, Patita Behera and Chittaranjan Purohita. These accused have been identified as having multiple cases registered against them, with charges ranging from theft and assault to organised crime and arms-related offences.
The police seized a significant amount of illicit material, including six country-made pistols (mouser) with magazines and 20 live ammunition rounds. Additionally, three mobile handsets were confiscated, which are believed to have been used in furtherance of the syndicate’s activities. A cash amount of Rs 2,100 was also recovered from the accused.
The operation was led by the notorious anti-social and arms dealer, Denga Muna @ Ramesh Parida, who was part of a key supply network identified after months of surveillance and reconnaissance.
“The accused are being booked under Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Organised Crime), the Arms Act, and other relevant sections. The Puri Police remain committed to neutralising such modules and ensuring the safety and security of the people of Puri. Special teams are engaged to track the forward and backwards linkages of the syndicate. Further investigation is underway to identify the full network of backward and forward linkages related to the smuggling operation.
