Bhubaneswar: After taking the ritualistic bath with 108 pitchers of sacred water Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra suffer from fever. During the period when the Holy Trinity undergo treatment inside ‘Anasara Ghara’ a special service – ‘Phuluri Seva’ is offered to them.
Traditionally, the Phooluri Seva is done on a particular day every year. This service was first introduced by Atibadi Jagannath Das the author of Srimad Bhagabat. He was one of the contemporary of Lord Chaitanya. For this service Phooluri oil is used.
This oil is prepared in the Odia Math established by Das. The ingredients of the oil include 4 kg pure til oil, roots of ‘Bena’ and fragrant flowers like, Jui (Jasmine), Jai (gomphrena) and Malli (white tulip).
All the ingredients are kept in an earthen pot which is sealed with clay and stored underground from ‘Hera Panchami’ to ‘Anaasara’ period. The oil is taken out and sent to the Jagannath Temple by a priest of the Math.
The Daitapatis (servitors of the deities during Anabasara period) apply this oil on the body of the ailing deities. After completion of the ‘Seva’, the deities are offered solid food.
Prior to this service, the deities consume liquid food as they are unwell. Approximately 165 Daitas (servitors) are in service of Lords. This is a very significant, mystic and phenomenal ritual of Sri Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
