Puri: The eviction drive at Swargadwar in pilgrim city Puri began with the demolition of ‘Patha Shraaddha’ complex on the premises of the crematorium on Tuesday. Next in line are the scientific chimney installed to filter the smoke emanating during burning of bodies and the iconic Biju Patnaik memorial.
The demolition is being carried out as part of the State Government’s plan to renovate and develop Swargadwara on the lines of Mahaprasthanam Crematoriums in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had on November 1 sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the project which involves setting up state-of-the-art facilities for cremation and rest shelter for the pallbearers. Besides, all-weather cremation facilities will be set-up for the convenience of the public.
It had been further announced that the funds for the development project will be made available from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) and will be carried out with the assistance of Phoenix Foundation.
