Bhubaneswar: A gas leak from a chemical factory in Chandaka Industrial Area of Bhubaneswar caused widespread panic among local residents on Saturday evening. However, swift action by the Fire Service personnel successfully averted a major disaster.
According to reports, Chandrasekharpur Fire Station received an emergency call about a gas leak at Shivam Chemicals, located in the industrial zone. Five Fire Service teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, equipped with a rescue tender, a water tanker, and four fire extinguishers.
The leaked gas was suspected to be sodium hypochlorite. Wearing full safety gear, including oxygen masks, fire personnel entered the factory and safely removed the defective cylinder to an isolated area. To neutralize the potential hazard, they sprayed a mixture of limestone and water. A gas detector was also deployed to check the air quality, which confirmed that there was no risk to human life as the air remained within safe standards.
As a precautionary measure, the road between Patia and Infocity was sealed, and traffic was diverted during the operation. Thanks to the timely intervention, the situation was brought under control without any reported injuries or further danger.
