Puri: The Dean and Principal of Sri Jagannath Medical College here, Prof Maya Padhi, lodged an FIR at the Penthakota Marine police station on Saturday last stating that Abhishek Meena was a victim of ragging by senior students of the college.
Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case against unidentified students and launched an investigation into the ragging allegation. Principal Prof Padhi said that the college has an internal mentorship and anti-ragging committee which is also probing into the matter.
According to reports, Abhishek Meena, a first-year student of the medical college, was subjected to ragging by some students of the second year on August 17. The seniors forcibly shaved off Abhishek’s beard and misbehaved with him.
Following this, Abhishek lodged a complaint with the college authorities, and the Dean, after discussions with the anti-ragging committee, filed a police complaint.
“The UGC clearly states that whenever there is an allegation of ragging, we are bound to initiate necessary actions and inform the UGC. In this case, we have filed an FIR and are probing the incident,” Prof Padhi said. “Even the SP visited the college and gave a talk to the students,” she added.
Puri SDPO said that the police registered a case on the basis of the FIR and launched an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the three accused students have submitted an apology letter to the college principal.
