Bhubaneswar: Light to moderate rainfall activity along with thunderstorm accompanied with hail and heavy rain is to continue across several districts of Odisha for the next three days, as informed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday.
Under the influence of mid and upper tropospheric Westerlies and interaction with low level easterlies and also moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall activity is very likely to occur at many places, till January 14 over districts of Odisha.
Also, isolated thunderstorm accompanied with hail and heavy rain is likely to occur in some districts of Odisha during this period, stated the IMD.
It has warned of thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri on Day 1.
On Day 2, thunderstorm with lightning and hail is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Bolangir, Nuapada, Nawarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada, Nayagarh, Cuttack, and Ganjam.
Besides, heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kandhamal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Ganjam.
Similarly, thunderstorm with lightning and hail is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri on Day 3.
Under the impact of the above weather phenomena, there may be some damages in agriculture and horticultural crops and traffic disruption in city area at the time of occurrence of intense rain spell.
In view of this, the IMD has issued the following advisory:
1. Postpone sowing of Rabi pulses and oil seeds for a few days.
2. As maximum early sown groundnut and mustard crop are a flowering stage and the upcoming rainfall will be helpful for those crops so farmers are advised to stop irrigation activities in those crops.
3. Make arrangement for covering with hail net or plastic cover or polythene sheet for vegetables like onion, tomato, chilly cauliflower which are at seedling stage and also do proper drainage channels to drain out excess water in nursery as well as main field.
4. Pause intercultural activities, fertilizer and pesticides applications as well as irrigation activities from during rainfall activity.
