Paralakhemundi: A rape accused arrested by a police team from Maharashtra escaped from custody at Mohana in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Sunday.

The rape accused has been identified as Juel Sabar of Antaraba under Mohana police station in the district.

According to reports, a police team from Nagpur in Maharashtra had nabbed the rape accused from a railway station and brought him to a lodge in Mohana on Saturday night. Before their departure for Nagpur, the cops were taking a bath keeping the accused handcuffed in the lodge.

Taking advantage of the situation, the accused gave the police a slip. Later, CCTV footage at the lodged showed the accused moving out of the building. He was reportedly seen on a bridge from where he disappeared into thick bush.

A search operation has been launched with the help of Mohana police to trace the whereabouts of Juel.
