Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur successfully performed surgery on a 50-year-old patient with a tumour in his spinal cord.
This complex operation marks a significant milestone for the hospital’s neurosurgery department, which has previously successfully conducted brain tumor surgeries.
According to reports, the patient, Baidya Nayak, a farmer from Andirakancha village under Kasipur block in Rayagada district, had been experiencing symptoms such as numbness in his legs and difficulty walking for three months. After seeking treatment at local hospitals and the Koraput Medical College without success, he was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in August.
Under the leadership of Dr Rabinarayan Panda, Head of the Neurosurgery Department, a team of five doctors performed the intricate three-hour surgery. They successfully removed a four-inch tumour from the patient’s spinal cord, which was causing his mobility issues.
After medical examination, it was discovered that the patient was suffering from Hemangioblastoma, a type of tumour that typically occurs in the spinal cord. This tumour affects the movement and functionality of other parts of the body. In this case, the tumour had progressed to the point where the patient had lost the ability to walk. The diagnosis highlighted the complexity of the condition and the need for prompt surgical intervention to restore mobility and prevent further complications. This tumour had caused paralysis which mad the patient unable to walk.
Baidya’s condition is stated to be stable and is currently under observation. He is expected to be discharged from the hospital next week.
