Bhubaneswar: The skilled craftsmen engaged in the construction of chariots of the Holy Trinity of Odisha completed the making of 42 chakas (wheels) for three grand chariots on Monday.
The construction of five chaupata and nahakas, which will essentially form the framework of the divine chariots is still in progress.
As per the tradition, the base of the chariot is constructed and assembled on the Deva Snana Purnima rituals of the Trinity, which is locally termed as assembling of Chaka, Akha, & Danda.
Four Nahaka (supporting pillars) are raised from the base structure known as gargara to form the shape of the chariots. The foundation of the three chariots is based upon 12 solid wooden pillars forming the base.
Out of 5 dandas of three chariots, the construction of four dandas has been completed. Meanwhile, the construction of the fifth danda is in progress.
In addition, the work of two 20-foot gargaras of three chariots has reached the final stage.
Yesterday, Rath Amin provided 20 feet long of Dhaura wood for the construction of four nahakas in the first phase.
Today Rath Amin provided two more pieces of Dhaura wood for three Rath with the help of Rath Amin (Bhoi Sewaks).
In comparison to the previous year, the wood logs supplied are thicker making the construction process a bit more difficult.
The rupakar sewaks (artisans) are engaged in carving the ferocious image of a lion in the corners of the three chariots, as well as other painting and polishing activities for the beautification of divine chariots.
This year the car festival of the Holy Trinity is scheduled to be held on July 07.
