Bhubaneswar: Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday announced that during this year’s Rath Yatra, any non-servitor found climbing the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, or Devi Subhadra will be arrested.
This announcement came ahead of the Rath Yatra in Puri, following a key meeting with the Chhatisa Nijog.
“In the meeting, we discussed strict regulatory measures, including the prohibition of non-servitors from climbing atop the chariots of Lord Jagannath and His siblings. Anyone found doing so will face immediate arrest,” the Minister told reporters.
Minister Harichandan also stated that a complete ban will be enforced on the use of mobile phones by servitors atop the chariots. “Mobile phones compromise both the sanctity and the security of the festival,” he said.
Addressing concerns over delays during the Pahandi ritual due to overcrowding, the Minister said discussions were held to ensure timely completion of the rituals.
“We have instructed the Nijog to submit a detailed plan outlining responsibilities and the management of the rituals,” he added.
Harichandan expressed optimism about a smooth and peaceful Rath Yatra this year. “With the blessings of Lord Jagannath, we are confident that devotees will have a peaceful darshan and return home without any inconvenience,” he said.
He further informed that invitations have been extended to several dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers of various states, and other prominent personalities. However, confirmation of attendance is still awaited.
