Gajapati: Tension ran high in Gumma block of Gajapati district on Thursday after some irate Congress members ransacked the block office and attacked some policemen while protesting the directive of the State Government asking ineligible beneficiaries to return their ration cards.

According to reports, protesting the Government’s order to return the ration cards, around 2000 Congress activists on Thursday gheraoed Gumma Block office.

Trouble started when the agitating Congress workers tried to barge into the block office to meet the Block Development Officer (BDO).

When the cops present there tried to block them to maintain the law and order situation, they were severely attacked and thrashed leaving them injured.

“Some local people taking the help of political leaders suddenly barged into BDO office to meet the BDO and when we tried to block them they ransacked the entire office with attacking some police officers,” said Paralakhemundi SDPO Utkal Ranjan Das.

Local Congress leader Premika Mandal, who was present at the spot, said, “As it’s a farming time, most of the people are unable to refund the money. Therefore, we were planning to handover a memorandum to the BDO but unfortunately some people created the ruckus.” Similarly, some Congress activists also staged a protest in front of Boden block in Nuapada over return of National Food Security Act (NFSA) cards.

Sources said around 19.80 lakh have been collected from 1069 ineligible beneficiaries in Boden block.
