Cuttack: While Cuttack is famed for its stunning Chandi Medhas (silver tableaux) with intricate designs during the Durga Puja, the city’s Rausapatna Puja Committee is all set to dazzle devotees and spectators with its unique spectacular glass tableaux this year.
Durga Puja celebrations by Rausapatna Puja Committee which commenced in 1897, will be entering its 127th year this year.
To give the occasion a unique touch of class, the committee is making a tableaux with pieces of glass which is almost complete. The tableaux will be inaugurated on the occasion of Sasthi.
The tableaux is made of 300 kilograms of glass using pieces of 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 5 mm, coloured foils, velvet paper, etc, has a height of 10 ft and 14 ft wide.
The organisers commenced work on the project nearly four months back.
What is interesting is the committee has not hired any artisans for making the tableaux this year.
“We are making a glass tableaux this year which will be unique and the first of its kind in Cuttack and Odisha as well. We are getting large pieces of glass which are then cut into small pieces of different shapes and dimensions. These small glass pieces are then affixed to thermocole and plywood,” informed Dilip Kumar Das, President, Rausapatna Puja Committee.
“This year the tableaux has been designed by a glass artisan of our Sahi. He is also our committee member. He is joined by a group of young volunteers from our Sahi who assist him in making the tableaux,” said Minaketan Das, a Sahi Elder.
The Rausapatna Puja Committee is spending about Rs 6 lakh for the making of the tableaux which can be used next year.
