Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for two districts in Odisha, warning of a severe thunderstorm accompanied by hail and gusty surface winds of up to 50-60 kmph within two hours.
The affected districts include Balasore and Mayurbhanj.
The red alert indicates a high level of threat to life and property, and residents in the affected areas are advised to take immediate action to ensure their safety.
“Under its impact damage to thatched huts, Minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches, water logging in low-lying area, Some damage to standing crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards may occur”, read the nowcast warning issued by the IMD at 2:45PM.
Besides, the regional weather office has advised people to take shelter in sturdy, pukka structures to avoid injury from wind-borne debris and lightning strikes. They should avoid taking shelter under trees, as they may be uprooted or struck by lightning. Farming operations should be temporarily suspended during the storm to minimise risks to life and property.
Additionally, people are cautioned to stay away from electric poles and wires to avoid electrocution.
