Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nowcast warning for severe thunderstorms with hail and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph, accompanied by lightning and moderate to intense rainfall, in three Odisha districts.
As per nowcast warning issued by the IMD at 1:30 pm, Gajapati, Rayagada and Ganjam districts will be affected by the inclement weather conditions. The warning is valid for the next two hours.
According to the IMD, the severe weather conditions may cause damage to thatched huts and minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches. Water logging in low-lying areas, damage to standing crops, banana, papaya trees, and orchards are also likely.
In light of the warning, residents in the affected areas are advised to take immediate precautions.
“People are advised to take shelter in pukka structures and avoid taking shelter under trees,” read the nowcast warning.
The regional weather office has advised farmers to suspend farming operations during the occurrence of the event. Additionally, people are cautioned to move away from electric poles and wires to avoid any potential hazards.
The IMD has urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
