Baripada: In a tragic incident, a retired Odisha government employee, Gopabandhu Parida, was killed after being run over by a paddy-laden truck in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday.
According to reports, Parida, a resident of Bisnupur village under Baisinga police station, was returning home on his bicycle from Betanoti when the accident occurred on the Brahmapura-Bisnupur road. The truck struck him, and he died on the spot.
Angry locals stopped the truck after the mishap and assaulted the driver, accusing him of reckless driving. The driver, identified as Janmejay Bindhani from Badasahi, sustained injuries in the attack and reportedly lost several teeth.
A team from Baisinga police station rushed to the scene to rescue Bindhani from the agitated mob. However, locals blocked the road, refusing to let the truck be moved and causing a traffic jam on both sides.
The protesters demanded appropriate compensation for Parida’s family, while police officials tried to persuade them to allow the truck to be removed.
Parida, who worked in the state government’s Finance Department, had retired four years ago. His untimely death has left the local community in shock. Police are investigating the accident and have assured the family of necessary support.
