Bhubaneswar: A Vigilance Court in Jeypore sentenced a retired Block Education Officer (BEO) of Gunupur in Rayagada district to 3 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs 10,000 in a bribery case on Wednesday.
According to an official press release, Special Judge, Vigilance, Jeypore awarded retired BEO of Gunupur Antaryami Behera 3 years RI and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 after convicting him for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 10,000 from a retired teacher to send his Service Book to Controller of Accounts, Bhubaneswar for release of his pending dues.
The court further ruled that in default of payment of the fine Behera has to undergo RI for 3 months more for the offence under section 7 of the PC (Amendment) Act, 2018.
Earlier, Behera was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance in Koraput Vigilance police station case no.4 of March 1, 2002.
The release added that Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Behera following his conviction.
