Bhubaneswar: A 55-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Jamaloi village under Bamra range of Sambalpur district.
The deceased has been identified as Purnachandra Dehuri, a resident of Jamaloi village.
As per reports, a herd of elephants entered the village on Wednesday night. Dehuri, along with other villagers, tried to chase the elephants away. However, while returning, Dehuri lagged behind and was attacked by one of the elephants.
The elephant is reported to have lifted Dehuri with its trunk and slammed him to the ground killing him on the spot. Villagers found Dehuri’s mutilated body near Nuabandha on Friday morning.
This is the second such incident in the area within a week. On November 18, a farmer was killed by an elephant in a nearby village.
Upon being informed, Forest Department officials reached the spot and launched an investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the district administration has been urged to take measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of villagers.
