Bhubaneswar: A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Sanabanki village under Turekela police station in Balangir district.
The deceased, Mandar Putel, was sleeping with her husband, father-in-law, and three children when the elephant strayed into their house and trampled her.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday night when the family members were asleep after dinner. The elephant herd entered the village, broke into the house, and attacked the woman, killing her. The other family members fled to a neighbouring house in panic.
Upon being informed, the forest department team arrived at the scene and retrieved the body from the house. The post-mortem was conducted in the presence of the Tahsildar, and the body was handed over to the family.
The Forest Department has, meanwhile, announced to pay compensation to the victim’s family.
