Bhubaneswar: In a bid to prioritize green energy, the Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched an innovative initiative to harness solar power to meet the city’s daily electricity demand. As part of this effort, solar projects have been installed on the rooftops of health and wellness centers, including the RMC head office.
This move has significantly reduced the reliance on traditional electricity sources, with solar energy now generating a substantial portion of the city’s power needs. The first phase of the project has seen the installation of solar power systems on rooftops of Health and Wellness Centre at Basanti colony, Rourkela Municipal Corporation Office, Chhend, Mahatab Road, Sector 6 and 22, Panposh, Gopabandhupalli, Tilka Nagar,
According to Ashutosh Kulkarni, Additional District Magistrate and RMC Commissioner, “The government’s emphasis on renewable energy sources for sustainable development has inspired RMC to adopt eco-friendly solar energy, resulting in reduced electricity tariffs. We plan to expand this project to other areas, bringing us closer to our goal of a clean and green Rourkela.”
This pioneering effort by RMC has been widely successful, aligning with global efforts to decrease dependence on thermal and hydropower generation. By leveraging solar energy, Rourkela is not only reducing its electricity costs but also taking a significant step towards creating a pollution-free and eco-friendly environment.
