The Legendary Origins of Rukuna Ratha Yatra
The Rukuna Ratha Yatra is steeped in mythology and legend. According to the Ekamra Purana, Lord Ramchandra worshipped Lord Shiva at Ekamra Kshetra to rid himself of the sin of killing Ravana, a Brahmin. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva advised Ram to establish four Lingas, leading to the construction of the Rameshwar, Lakshmaneshwar, Bharateshwar, and Shatrughaneshwar temples. Legend has it that the Rameshwar temple was established on Ashokastami, marking the beginning of the Rukuna Ratha Yatra. Every year, Lord Lingaraj visits the Rameshwar temple on this day to pay respects to Lord Ram. Another legend tells the story of the demon Tripurasura, who terrorized the earth until Lord Shiva used a special chariot, Rukuna, to vanquish him. Accompanied by Goddess Shakti (Rukmini), Lord Shiva’s victory is commemorated in this grand festival.
Rituals
The Rukuna Ratha Yatra is marked by grand rituals and traditions. Maa Bhubaneswari accompanies Mahaprabhu Lingaraj on the chariot, symbolizing the slaying of the demon Asura. Brahma serves as the charioteer, while thousands of devotees pull the chariot with great fervor. The chariot halts near the Rameshwar temple, where devotees perform rituals for four days. On the fifth day, Lord Lingaraj returns to the Lingaraj temple in the chariot, concluding the festival.
