Balasore: A postal office based at a rural area here in the district was set on fire by unidentified miscreants last night following which important official documents and other assets have reduced to ashes.
While the incident has taken place at Sampei village under Khaira Police Station (PS) limits on Sunday night, it was noticed by a nearby grocery shop owner this morning and was immediately intimated to the postmaster.
The locals at once swung into action to douse the flames. However, the important documents and other valuable assets of the rural post office had got gutted by that time.
The lock of the front door of the post office was also found to have been broken.
It is being suspected that the reason behind the crime is old rivalry.
After registering a case basing on the postmaster’s written complaint, Khaira police initiated investigation.
Talking to media on the spot, Sampei postmaster Shasmita Jena said, “This morning, the nearby grocery shop owner and some other villagers intimated me that smoke was bellowing out from the post office. When rushed there, we found official assets burning. Now I’ll move to the police station to lodge an FIR.”
“I haven’t yet gone inside to assess the damage caused. I’ll file FIR and urge for action against the miscreants soon,” she reacted.
