Sambalpur: The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission in Sambalpur on Tuesday directed a leading electronics company to pay a total of Rs 91,000 to a customer after a laptop order was delivered as a marble stone.
Dr. Choubarga Naik, a resident of Jhankarpali village under Jujomura block, had ordered a laptop worth Rs 61,000 from the company. The package was delivered as an ‘open box,’ and while unboxing and recording the process on video, Dr. Naik discovered that the box contained a marble stone instead of the laptop.
Following the incident, Dr. Naik lodged complaints with the electronics company and made multiple follow-ups, but the firm neither refunded the money nor took any corrective action. Frustrated, he approached the Sambalpur District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.
After examining the case, the commission ruled in favor of Dr. Naik. The company was ordered to refund the Rs 61,000 paid for the laptop, pay Rs 25,000 as compensation for mental harassment, and Rs 5,000 toward litigation costs. The order also stated that failure to comply within 30 days would result in an additional 9% compound interest on the amount.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Naik said, “I feel relieved and happy that justice has been delivered. The decision is a warning to companies to remain accountable to consumers.”
