Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Cabinet has approved a major project to improve the drinking water supply system in Sambalpur Town, aiming to provide 24×7 water supply to all households in Sambalpur, Hirakud, and Burla towns.
The project, titled “Improvement of Drinking Water Supply with 24×7 Water Supply System to Sambalpur Town on Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contract including Operation and Maintenance for a Period of Five Years,” will be executed by Water Corporation of Odisha under the Housing and Urban Development Department.
The project is necessary due to the growing population of Sambalpur Municipal Corporation, which has reached approximately 4.75 lakhs and is projected to increase to 7 lakhs by 2043. The existing water treatment plants have reached saturation, and the new project will enhance the treatment capacity to meet the increasing demand.
The project involves several key components, including the construction of a 110 MLD capacity intake well, installation of vertical turbine pump sets, construction of conventional water treatment plants, wastewater recycling, and sludge treatment units. The project will provide clean drinking water to all households in the area, adhering to the guidelines set by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) and the quality standards of IS 10500.
The cabinet has approved a capital expenditure of Rs. 382,40,28,558 (excluding GST) for the project, which will be executed by the selected bidder, M/s Eagle Infra India Ltd, Thane, Maharashtra. The work is scheduled to start on September 1, 2025, and is expected to be completed by August 31, 2027.
This project aligns with the “Viksit Odisha” vision to make cities livable and will significantly improve the quality of life for the residents of Sambalpur, Hirakud, and Burla towns by providing a reliable and continuous water supply.
