Sambalpur: Police have arrested four persons in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a married woman in Sambalpur on Saturday night, they will be forwarded to court soon.
“The four accused persons have been arrested on the basis of available evidence. In this case, we have given prime importance to the victim’s statement. Based on her statement an FIR has been registered at the Ainthapali police station. A DSP rank woman police officer is the Investigating Officer (IO) in the case. On completion of certain legal formalities like medical examination etc they will be forwarded to court today,” informed Sambalpur SP, Kanwar Vishal Singh addressing a presser here this afternoon.
Terming the case as “very sensitive” the SP revealed that the State Police Headquarters has red-flagged the case and every effort will be made to submit chargesheet in the case within 20 days.
He added that a special public prosecutor will be engaged by the police/government after the filing of the chargesheet for speedy trial in the case.
“The victim is a major, currently, she is admitted to VIMSAR at Burla and her health condition is stated to be stable,” the Sambalpur SP further revealed.
While informing that all the accused persons are majors and are locals, he said that their past criminal history if any is being investigated.
Singh stated that topmost priority has been accorded to the case, best possible efforts, available manpower, and resources have been put to use and added that evidence has been gathered though investigation is still underway.
He informed that the accused have been booked under 376(D) of the IPC and other relevant sections.
“The local police on getting information acted immediately, a PCR van rushed to the spot to rescue the woman. And upon lodging an FIR suo motu, police began its investigations which led to the arrests,” Singh further informed.
