Puri: The process for removal of sand from inside the assembly hall (Jagamohan) of Konark Sun Temple commenced following a Bhumi Pujan at the site on Thursday. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) said that the process began after two years of research and documentation.
ASI Odisha Circle Superintendent Arun Mallick said, “We have a safe process in place for removing the sand. We will remove the sand through the four gates and stabilise the sanctum sanctorum so that people can go inside it.”
The ASI experts have set up a mechanical platform to ensure that the work progresses fast. “The platform will be placed from where we will make tunnels.”
To provide only technical know-how, BDR Nirman Private Limited has been awarded the tender. None but the ASI staff will be engaged in sand removal work.
It may be noted that India has 38 UNESCO World Heritage Sites while Odisha has only one which is the Sun Temple at Konark.
