Bhubaneswar: Believe it or not, this Christmas Santa Claus is distributing plants as a gift to people visiting the Catholic Church in Satyanagar in Bhubaneswar. Santa has gifted over 300 plants on Monday on a first-come-first-serve basis.
The novel Santa gift is an initiative of Bakul Foundation, which has launched a campaign to inculcate the habit of planting trees among people keeping in view the effects of global warming.
According to Sudip Mahapatra of Bakul Foundation, a movement for volunteerism, they have been focusing on climate change for several years now and making the people aware of the global warming and its negative impact.
“Santa Claus and gifts are synonymous. So we thought why not gift plants to people visiting the church at Satyanagar in Bhubaneswar. Gifting plants will help to instill the habit of growing trees among the people and ensure that the environment is cleaner and greener,” Mahapatra said.
Bakul Foundation undertakes several social and cultural campaigns and gifting plants is among them. “We have been gifting trees on various occasions, including marriages, birthdays, and social functions. We hope our initiative will help people realise the threats of global warming.”
