Bhubaneswar: 1988-batch Odisha cadre IPS officer Dr Satyajit Mohanty took charge as the interim DG of Odisha Police on Wednesday. He will be holding the office till newly appointed DGP Abhay assumes office.
Dr Mohanty who has been appointed as Special DG Intelligence in a late evening reshuffle had been directed to take additional charge of DGP immediately. Incumbent DGP BK Sharma has been transferred and posted as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Home Department.
In the career spanning over 30 years Dr Mohanty has been posted in a number of police Districts and Ranges, worked in the Anti-corruption Department, Fire and Civil Defence Department, Training Directorate and Police Housing Corporation, Police Headquarters, Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack and Director General, Prisons and Director, Correctional Services of Odisha before his elevation to the rank of Director General of Police.
He holds Master of Science degree and Bachelor degree in Law from Utkal University, Master Degree in Human Rights from Pondicherry University and Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy & Management from IIM, Bangalore & Maxwell School of Public Policy, Syracuse University, USA. He has been awarded Ph.D. degree in Law by the National Law University, Odisha.
Dr Mohanty has authored five books on professional subjects; “Human Rights in Policing”, “Human Behaviour & Police Ethics”, “Police Reforms’ and ‘Criminology”. His latest book, “Community Policing as a Public Policy: Challenges and Recommendations”, has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, UK in 2014.
He is a recipient of Police (Antrik Suraksha Seva) Medal, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. He takes keen interest in sports and games. Tennis and cycling are his outdoor hobbies. He has been functioning as the Vice President of Odisha Tennis Association.
