Cuttack: SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has added another feather to its cap after its doctors successfully performed the first-ever liver transplantation on Wednesday.
According to sources, a 35-year-old woman from Tigiria area in Cuttack district donated her liver to give a new lease of life to her 45-year-old husband. Her liver was successfully transplanted on her husband following a nine-hour-long operation.
A nine-member team of doctors from SCB and the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad carried out the operation held from 8 am to 5.30 pm.
The surgery was conducted by a joint team of 30 medical experts led by renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr P Balachandran Menon.
However, the advance treatment was carried out at the special modular operation theatre at the trauma building on the hospital premises.
It is learnt that the wife donated 60 per cent of her liver to save her husband.
With the successful liver plantation, the premier medical institution has become the first government health facility to start liver transplantation in the state.
Talking to the media, SCB Superintendent Doctor Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra said, “The donor was taken to the operation theatre at 7.30 am. The operation was started at 8 am and the recipient was taken to OT around 9 am. We successfully transplanted the donor’s liver into the recipient by 4 pm. Liver transplantation is the most difficult transplantation compared to heart and kidney transplantation. Condition of both donor and taker are stated to be stable.”
